In 2011, MoMA acquired an adjacent building that housed the American Folk Art Museum on West 53rd Street. The building had been accomplished in 2001 to designs by Tod Williams Billie Tsien Architects and was sold in connection with a monetary restructuring of the Folk Art Museum. In January 2014, MoMA determined to raze the American Folk Art Museum, which was between MoMA’s existing construction and the proposed tower at 53 West 53rd Street. The architectural neighborhood protested the deliberate demolition partly because that constructing was relatively new, having been completed in 2001.
Collection highlights include Claude Monet’s Water Lilies, Vincent van Gogh’s The Starry Night, and Pablo Picasso’s Les Demoiselles d’Avignon, together with more modern works by Andy Warhol, Elizabeth Murray, Cindy Sherman, and lots of others.
